Ivan Toney has emerged as a potential target for Chelsea, with Graham Potter keen to add a striker to his squad.
According to eminent journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea have sorted down a number of strikers as their target, and Brentford frontman Ivan Toney could be one of them. The 26-year-old English striker has been in tremendous form this season, and the Bees will receive plenty of offers once the transfer window opens.
Toney has struck gold this term, as he has netted eight goals in the Premier League. And his goalscoring ability could hand him a place in the World Cup squad for his national side.
Gareth Southgate has liked the idea of Toney being a suitable backup to Harry Kane. And England’s recent struggles have evidently shown that they need some fresh legs to compete in Qatar.
Chelsea have relied on mostly Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for goals. Armando Broja has shown some promise but is yet to burst into the scene. Co-owner Todd Boehly will be granting funds for a talismanic striker in the summer, and Toney could be the man.
Manchester United have also expressed their interest in enticing the 26-year-old English striker to Old Trafford. So Chelsea might have a tough task on their hand.
Aubameyang has hit the twilight of his career and needs to be replaced by a top-notch striker in a year or two. Romelu Lukaku was expected to fill in that role, but his broken relationship with the club hierarchy might see the end of him very soon.
Lukaku’s loan stint with Inter could be extended by another season. And Chelsea might have to forego a whole lot of money in an attempt to get rid of the Belgian. Todd Boehly vested his interest in a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo. But Thomas Tuchel was reluctant to have the Portuguese as his leading man. Toney has thrived under Thomas Frank and will be well suited to Potter’s plans.
Like Tuchel, Potter does not want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. But Brentford will demand a fortune to sell their most bankable asset, although Boehly has already reiterated his desire to splash the money for his club. Jonathan David and Rafael Leao also remain on Chelsea’s radar to bolster their offensive unit.
