Turkish giants Galatasaray are interested in Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan
According to The Sun, Turkish Super Lig heavyweights Galatasaray are interested in making a move for Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
The midfielder moved to The Etihad from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and has developed into a key player for Pep Guardiola. He has since made 267 appearances for the Premier League champions, scoring 51 goals and making 34 assists.
The German international is about to turn 32 and is not getting any younger. With Manchester City looking to rebuild, the time might be right for the German international to move on. Gundogan has a little under a year to go on his contract at The Etihad and can be signed for free.
A Turkish descendant, Gundogan had in the past revealed his dream to play in the Super Lig. While he might not have any shortage of suitors should he enter free agency, Galatasaray could have the advantage when it comes to negotiations. Partnering him with former Arsenal man Lucas Torreira could give the Turks a reliable double pivot full of dynamism and intelligence.
Not only can the Turks allow him to play in the country he desires, but also make him the central piece of their squad. Gundogan still has the tools to thrive in a second-tier European league and could stretch out his career by a few more years.
A central midfielder, the German is capable of playing in an offensive and defensive role. His all-action presence in the middle of the park is clear for all to see. Add to it his experience of playing against top opposition, and it is clear to see why he continues to be in demand.
A good passer, Gundogan is adept at playing in the channels and asserting dominance in the middle of the park. He is capable of making decisive through balls and can also win back the ball with ease. This makes him a dominant presence in midfield, capable of helping dictate the pace of the game. Add to it Gundogan’s ability to come up with key goals, and one can see why he will have options come next summer.
Man City signed Kalvin Phillips last summer, but the English midfielder is yet to make an impact under Guardiola. Should he go on to impress, City might be amenable to parting ways with Gundogan next year. Either way, Gundogan’s legacy at the club is already set in stone.
