Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku, a target for Chelsea.

According to a report from The Sun, Liverpool scouted Christopher Nkunku in action during RB Leipzig’s UEFA Champions League clash against Celtic this week. The 24-year-old attacker is also a target for the Reds’ Premier League rival Chelsea.

Nkunku has developed into one of the most promising young attackers around Europe. And it is no surprise that the top Premier League clubs are trailing him. The player has previously been linked with a move to Chelsea, and it is believed that the Blues are confident of securing his services at the end of the season.

However, Liverpool are clearly not concerned with the developments. And the Reds have now joined the pursuit of the French international. Nkunku can play as an attacking midfielder as well as a wide forward. And he will be a superb addition to Jurgen Klopp’s attacking unit at Anfield.

The 24-year-old had an exceptional 2021/22 season, as he managed to score 35 goals across all competitions and pick up 20 assists as well. Nkunku has also started the ongoing campaign in fine form, with ten goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

The Frenchman has the potential to develop into a world-class attacker, and someone like Klopp can help him develop and fulfil his tremendous potential. It is no secret that Liverpool will need to improve their squad in order to challenge for the major trophies again. And Nkunku could be the ideal long-term replacement for Sadio Mane, who joined Bayern Munich in the summer.

Liverpool chose not to replace Mane with a similar player at the start of the season. Colombian winger Luiz Diaz has made the left-wing slot his own. But Liverpool are missing Mane’s sharpness in the box. While Diaz has been an exceptional creator for Liverpool, the Reds can use someone who can score goals consistently. And Nkunku could be that player for Klopp.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old can operate as a false nine and could be the long-time replacement for Roberto Firmino as well. The Brazilian international is nearing the end of his contract at the club, and he is expected to move on in the summer. But it will be interesting to see if Liverpool can beat Chelsea to Nkunku’s signature.
