Manchester United can finally get their target as FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa could be on his way to Old Trafford.

According to Diario de Noticias, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are the favourites to sign FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa. The 23-year-old Portuguese international has been in brilliant form, and his exploits between the sticks have already triggered an alarm among various clubs.

Manchester United do have one of the best in business in David de Gea, who has been more than consistent for his side in the past decade. But the modern game demands more than just shot-stopping, and the Spaniard seems to be lacking in some of those aspects.

Erik ten Hag craves a sweeper keeper who can not only helps his team in building from the back but can take part in launching the most accurate ball if needed. That is why Manchester United have shown interest in several goalkeepers, including Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Meanwhile, de Gea has worked on his game, and improvements have been evident. But there have been doubts over his adaptability to ten Hag’s approach. And perhaps, Manchester United could introduce a new face to offer the 31-year-old some stiff competition.

Generally, a goalkeeper hits his peak in his late twenties. But Costa has already broken all the shackles and has demonstrated what he is capable of at Porto. It is expected the 23-year-old Portuguese international is destined to reach the pinnacle of his career pretty early.

Against Bayer Leverkusen, he became the first player to register an assist and save a penalty in the UEFA Champions League in a single game. And his stock could further rise after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Costa has already made Portugal’s number one position his own. And if the Seleccao want to have a solid 2022 World Cup, he has a vital role to play.

With his current contract expiring in 2026, Manchester United would have to pay a substantial sum to acquire the rights of the player. According to reports, Costa has a £51 million release clause in his contract. But the Red Devils are expected to negotiate the amount.

Manchester City number one Ederson Moraes remains the most expensive goalkeeper sold by a Portuguese club. But should Diogo Costa decide to leave Porto, he could eclipse that pretty easily as it stands.
