Newcastle United might reportedly be a potential destination for Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek.

Newcastle United have emerged as a potential option for Manchester United misfit Donny van de Beek ahead of the winter transfer window. That is according to Dean Jones on GIVEMESPORT, who claims that the Magpies still hold an interest in the 25-year-old Dutch attacking midfielder and could make a play for him in January.

Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United in 2020 for a fee that could rise to £40 million with add-ons. Unfortunately for the midfielder and Manchester United, this transfer has not gone to plan so far. He has only been a bit-part player over the past few seasons, falling out of favour under both previous coaches, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

The Dutchman joined Everton on a short-term loan last season, but his spell at Goodison Park was ultimately hampered by a niggling thigh issue. He only made seven Premier League appearances for the Toffees before returning to Manchester United’s Carrington training base.

The Dutch international was expected to play a significant role for the Red Devils this season after reuniting with his former Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag. That, however, has not been the case, and the midfielder has only had 19 minutes of football action. He is short on confidence and is currently out with a muscular issue.

In truth, it is hard to envisage the Dutchman getting any more game time at Old Trafford, as things are turning from bad to worse rapidly. The summer signing of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, coupled Bruno Fernandes’s stellar form, as well as the backup options in Fred and Scott McTominay, have all pushed him to the bottom of the pecking order.

And, according to 90min, his days at Old Trafford are numbered, as the Dutch playmaker has been granted permission to depart when the transfer market reopens in January.

Despite his lack of minutes, the former Ajax midfielder still has plenty of suitors in the market. High-flying Newcastle United are also in the mix of Premier League clubs interested in securing his services, despite the Dutchman turning down the Magpies in favour of Everton last January.

Newcastle currently sit in the lofty heights of the top-six in the Premier League table after beating Brentford 5-1 at St. James’ Park over the weekend. Eddie Howe is looking for a holding midfielder who can allow Bruno Guimaraes to get forward and create openings in the attacking third.

Alternatively, Newcastle might pursue someone who will be actively involved in goal contributions, similar to top target James Maddison, with Guimaraes being comfortable in the anchor role.

Donny van de Beek has bags of potential that Eddie Howe can work with after restoring his confidence. But so do Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson, both of whom are much younger than the Dutchman and are performing at a good level at present.

With Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, and Sean Longstaff also in Newcastle’s midfield unit, it is not an easy midfield pack to break into, with only three starting spots on offer in Howe’s 4-3-3 system, unless someone brings sheer quality and proven numbers to the table.
