Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing 24-year-old Algerian midfielder Ismael Bennacer from Serie A giants AC Milan.
According to a report from Fichajes, Ismael Bennacer is one of the four midfielders Liverpool are considering for the 2023 summer transfer window. The 24-year-old has established himself as a key player for AC Milan. And he is on Reds’ shortlist to reinforce their midfield department at the end of the season.
It is no secret that Liverpool will have to improve their midfield options if they want to challenge for major trophies again.
Jordan Henderson and James Milner are simply past their peak. Meanwhile, Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara have been injury-prone. Curtis Jones is still quite young and not ready to feature regularly at the highest level yet. In addition, Arthur Melo is a temporary signing and will return to parent club Juventus at the end of the season.
The central midfield is Liverpool’s priority to strengthen right now, and it will be interesting to see if they can bring in the necessary players next year. The report claims that Jude Bellingham remains the priority target for Jurgen Klopp. And Bennacer is an alternative should the Reds fail to sign the England international. Apparently, Youri Tielemans and Marcelo Brozovic are on Liverpool’s list as well.
While Bellingham is likely to cost a club-record fee, Bennacer could be available for a more reasonable price. Apparently, the AC Milan midfielder is valued at just €33 million.
The Algerian international has proven this quality in Serie A, and the opportunity to join a Premier League club could be a tempting proposition. The 24-year-old will add calmness and composure at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. Furthermore, his defensive discipline makes him the ideal partner for Fabinho in a double pivot.
The 24-year-old is still young with room for improvement. Working with a manager like Klopp could help him improve further and fulfil his potential. It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool are willing to formalise their interest and come forward with a concrete offer.
