Barcelona still interested in Javi Galan

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly still interested in signing 27-year-old Spanish left-back Javi Galan from Celta Vigo.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Javi Galan remains the subject of interest from Barcelona, this time over a possible move in a transfer window in 2023. The Catalan giants want to sell Jordi Alba and view the 27-year-old Celta Vigo left-back as a viable replacement.

Javi Galan has established himself as one of the most reliable left-backs in La Liga since enjoying a breakthrough 2020/21 campaign with SD Huesca. While Huesca went down to the second division after being relegated, the Spaniard remained in La Liga, joining Celta Vigo last year.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a solid stint thus far with Celta Vigo, becoming a pivotal figure for the Galician club. Galan has turned out 83 times for Celta, chipping in with two goals and five assists. And his performances have not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona being one of his prospective suitors.

Galan had been on Barcelona’s radar for two successive summer transfer windows (2021 and 2022). But the Blaugrana never pulled the trigger and ended up signing Marcos Alonso from Chelsea last month. However, the Spanish left-back has only signed a one-year contract with Barcelona and might become a free agent next summer.

In addition, Jordi Alba faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with Barcelona ready to sell him. The report claims that Joan Laporta wants to offload the veteran defender in 2023, with Juventus reportedly interested in him. And the Blaugrana will have to invest in a left-back if Alonso leaves next summer. Galan has thus emerged as a viable target again for Barcelona.

The 27-year-old is at the peak of his powers and has the quality to alternate with Alejandro Balde at Camp Nou. But Galan is not the only left-back on Barcelona’s wishlist, with Alejandro Grimaldo and Alex Moreno also on the Catalan club’s wishlist.

The report does not mention when Barcelona will launch the offensive for Galan, Grimaldo or Moreno. But the Blaugrana will likely pursue a left-back if Alonso leaves as a free agent next summer, provided Alba also departs.
