Chelsea are reportedly keeping an eye on Milan Skriniar’s situation, with the Slovakian defender is in the last year of his deal with Inter Milan.
According to Calciomercato, Chelsea remain interested in pursuing a deal for Milan Skriniar, and they could make an approach at the earliest possible chance. The Slovakian defender is in the last year of his deal with Inter Milan, so a January move cannot be ruled out, while he will be available as a free agent in the summer.
Milan Skriniar was at the centre of a transfer battle between many clubs during the summer transfer window. Paris Saint-Germain were the front-runners for most parts, as new director Luis Campos wanted to revamp the club’s defensive options.
As the links between Presnel Kimpembe and Chelsea gained momentum, Campos tried to lure Skriniar to Paris. However, Inter Milan’s financial demands and PSG’s subsequent refusal to match them meant that the 27-year-old remained at San Siro.
Other clubs in the mix, including Chelsea, were desperate to land a top-rated central defender in the summer. After facing disappointment in the pursuits of Matthijs de Ligt and Jules Kounde, the Premier League giants opted to bring Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana during the window.
While Thomas Tuchel has since left Chelsea, new manager Graham Potter will be eager to add a few more names. With top-quality centre-backs few and far between in the market, Chelsea may opt to return for some of their targets from the summer, including Milan Skriniar.
The Slovakian defender did have a huge price tag hanging over his shoulders in the previous window, but that could be considerably slashed in January. The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract at Inter Milan, forcing the Serie A giants to cash in during the winter or risk losing him for free when the season ends.
Hence, Chelsea could approach Inter in January, hoping the Nerazzurri will accept a cut-price deal. If not, they might be content with signing the Slovak on a free transfer, although the competition could be intense, with Real Madrid also likely to be in contention.
PSG could also come back for Skriniar, with the player seemingly keen on moving to Paris in the summer. However, the lure of Chelsea and London cannot be taken lightly. The battle for the 27-year-old could prove intense in the upcoming windows, with the Premier League giants firmly one of the strongest contenders.
