Manchester United ponder loan move for Thomas Meunier

Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club, and Manchester United are keen.

According to reputed English journalist Jason Burt from Daily Telegraph, 30-year-old Belgian international Thomas Meunier might be available on loan, and Manchester United are looking to snap him up from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

It is no secret that Manchester United will have to add more quality and depth to their full-back positions, and Meunier could be a quality short-term addition for them. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been quite disappointing in recent seasons, and the player has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

However, manager Erik ten Hag has not been able to sanction his departure due to the lack of options in the right-back position. The former Crystal Palace defender has been usurped by Diogo Dalot, who has taken up the first-team role now. However, there is still room for improvement, and Meunier could push the Portuguese youngster for a starting role at Manchester United this season.

The 30-year-old managed to pick up two goals and five assists across 26 matches in all competitions last season, and he missed quite a few matches because of injury. The Belgian right-back will be hoping to regain his form and match fitness with regular action this season.

A move to Manchester United could be ideal for the Borussia Dortmund defender, even though the Bundesliga club have ruled out a deal. Meunier has the experience and the quality to thrive in the Premier League, and he will know all about the challenges at a top club having played for Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.

Furthermore, his experience will allow the 30-year-old to adapt to a new league quickly, and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can agree on a loan deal with the Bundesliga club before the transfer window closes. Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation of Sergio Dest from Barcelona as well, and it will be interesting to see who they end up signing eventually.

Meunier has proven himself to be a reliable defender over the years and is quite effective going forward as well. His balanced skillset makes him an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka, who is quite mediocre in the offensive phase of play. The former Crystal Palace defender will have to improve immensely going forward if he wants to hold down a regular starting spot under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United in the future.
