Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

According to Sky Sports, Premier League giants Liverpool are keeping a close watch on Benfica newsboy Enzo Fernandez.

The Reds are currently in the market for a midfielder, and with just days left in the 2022 summer transfer window, several names have been touted as potential targets. A new addition to that list is the 21-year-old Argentine who moved to Europe this summer.

A central midfielder also capable of fulfilling a defensive role, Fernandez has been one of the best young talents to come out of South America in recent years. He also has excellent vision and is capable of breaking through defensive lines with his passing range. This augurs well for the Reds, who often play the ball through transition very quickly and shift gears from defence to attack in unison. He is also good in the air and can help the Reds win the first ball on more occasions.

Having him play alongside the master in Thiago Alcantara would also be a good move for his development. While Fernandez has the potential to become a star at Anfield, the chances of his moving to Merseyside this summer seem remote.

The move to Benfica will allow the 21-year-old to make a name for himself in Europe. It will also hand the Reds an opportunity to monitor Fernandez’s development and make an informed future transfer decision. Liverpool, for their part, need a player who can step in and make a difference from the word go. Bringing in an unproven player and putting their faith in him is a risky move.

Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita have had their injury issues, while James Milner and Jordan Henderson are not getting any younger. The midfield requires a complete overhaul, and that could be on the agenda in the summer of 2023.

Jude Bellingham remains heavily linked with a move to Anfield, but signing the English wonderkid will not be enough. The Reds need two or three long-term additions in the middle of the park, and whether Fernandez will be one of them remains to be seen.
