A host of Premier League sides are vying for Matt O’Riley, with the Celtic star grabbing the attention with his stellar rise.

According to ESPN, Manchester United and Arsenal are among teams vying for Matt O’Riley. The 21-year-old Celtic star has seen his stature rise in the last season, as he is steadily considered an exciting talent coming out of Scotland.

Manchester United and Arsenal could end the summer window as one of the top spenders in world football. However, while their need to bring in established stars is understandable, the clubs are also looking to blood youngsters and focus on future teams.

It’s become increasingly necessary to acquire young players from the academy or other clubs, which could prove an efficient decision for the future. Nowadays, signing established players would cost a lot.

Hence, it’s imperative to acquire them when a cheaper opportunity arrives, and this could be the case with Matt O’Riley. The Celtic star is growing in stature but does not have vast experience. He did feature around 12 times for the club last season in the League, although that was deemed enough for Arsenal and Manchester United to register an interest.

The central midfielder is proving his efficiency in the middle of the park, and teams like the Premier League clubs could do with someone like him. Manchester United require quality midfielders for the future, and signing Matt O’Riley could prove a wise step for the team ahead.

However, the youngster will have to be nurtured correctly and probably kept in the first team squad to gain more experience. He could be played in cup games or as a substitute, which would aid his development over the season. However, Manchester United are reportedly rivalled by Arsenal, who could also eye a move.

The Gunners are always looking out for young talents under Mikel Arteta. The Spanish manager brought the likes of Sambi Lokonga to build for the future. However, any move for Matt O’Riley would depend on some outgoings, as the squad for youngsters seems to be packed at Arsenal.

Youngsters like Charlie Patino joined Blackpool, so there could be some room in the U-23 squad. However, Matt O’Riley may want to play first-team football for his next club or at least have the expectation to be involved in the senior squad.

Matt Smith is also attracting interest and could depart before the window shuts. Arsenal or Manchester United’s interest in Matt O’Riley may not materialise in this window. However, the clubs could look to agree on a deal with Celtic at the earliest and secure the player’s future.

  1. Desmond Garrity says:

Hands off our talent, Matt is good enough to play 1st team football, not be another player who will get an odd game now and then in some obscure cup tie. He will be playing in front of 60,000 in the CL at parkhead and even more in Madrid. Why go to some inferior English team.

  2. Arsenal should forget any other Midfielder, rather than Youri Teileman. If we can sign Teileman, I bet you, we will compete with other clubs this season.
