Real Sociedad eyeing Martin Braithwaite move

Real Sociedad will reportedly look to sign Barcelona outcast Martin Braithwaite before the summer transfer window shuts down.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Manu Sainz, Martin Braithwaite is the subject of interest from La Liga club Real Sociedad over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. The Danish striker is out of favour at FC Barcelona, who will look to cash in on him this summer.

Martin Braithwaite has been a dependable backup option for Barcelona since arriving from CD Leganes as an emergency signing in February 2020. While the 31-year-old has not started games regularly, he has delivered the goods whenever a manager has required a solid performance from him.

But the Danish striker has reached his lowest ebb as a Barcelona player this summer, with Xavi Hernandez deeming him surplus to requirements. Braithwaite did not travel with Barcelona on the pre-season tour to the USA and is yet to feature in La Liga thus far this season. But his horrors at Camp Nou might end soon, with Real Sociedad keen on signing him.

Alexander Isak has left Real Sociedad this week, with Newcastle United completing a club-record deal to sign the Swedish striker this summer. Isak’s departure has left Imanol Alguacil short of quality options to spearhead the Real Sociedad attack this season, compelling La Real to enter the market for a centre-forward.

Raul de Tomas is the priority target for Real Sociedad, but the Spanish international might be too expensive for the Basque outfit, even though the two parties remain in contact. In addition, Real Madrid might launch the offensive to sign de Tomas in the coming days, possibly blowing their fellow La Liga club out of the water.

Braithwaite has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Sociedad, with La Real weighing up a late move. The Barcelona outcast has also popped up on the radars of several other La Liga clubs, including RCD Mallorca. But joining Real Sociedad might be an attractive prospect, considering he will get to play European football at the Reale Arena.

Barcelona might even terminate Braithwaite’s contract to get him off the books, and a move to Real Sociedad could be on the cards for the 31-year-old. It will be interesting to see if a move across La Liga sees the light of day for the Barcelona outcast in the final days of the summer transfer window.
