AC Milan lead race to sign Trevoh Chalobah

AC Milan are reportedly keen on signing the Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah before the summer transfer window closes and lead the race to sign him.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, AC Milan are in talks with Chelsea to sign 23-year-old defender Trevoh Chalobah, who is keen on leaving the west London club.

The Serie A outfit are looking to add more depth and quality to the defensive department, and they have identified the Chelsea defender as a target. The Rossoneri are hoping to sign Chalobah on loan with an option to buy. But they are content with just a loan deal if Chelsea are unwilling to sell the player permanently in future.

Chalobah managed to break into the first-team scene at Stamford Bridge last season. And although he failed to hold down a regular starting berth, the youngster impressed from time to time for Chelsea, and he will be hoping to continue his development with regular first-team football this season.

Chelsea are unlikely to be able to provide him with that platform after verbally agreeing to a deal for Wesley Fofana. And so, a loan move makes sense for all parties. Chalobah will not want to halt his development by sitting on the bench at Stamford Bridge throughout the season, and a move to AC Milan could help him progress.

The report from Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the Serie A champions made initial enquiries for the young defender. But those approaches have now turned into real discussions with the Premier League club. With the Chelsea defender already keen on leaving Stamford Bridge this summer, it is fair to assume that a loan deal is just around the corner. It will be interesting to see where the 23-year-old ends up.

AC Milan have previously signed Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea, and the English defender benefited from the move. Tomori has established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A. Chalobah will hope to follow in Tomori’s footsteps as well, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops over the next few days.

The report further adds that AC Milan are prepared to pay a reported €3 million loan fee for the talented young Chelsea defender, and they are also preparing for contingencies should the Blues refuse to let him leave.

Recently, we covered reports that Thomas Tuchel could block the defender’s exit if Chelsea fail to bring in a quality centre-back. But with Fofana set to join Chelsea, Chalobah might be set for an adventure in the Serie A.
