Villarreal considering Sergio Reguilon move

La Liga outfit Villarreal are reportedly keen on securing the services of Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Villarreal manager Unai Emery is looking to add two more signings to his squad before the summer transfer window closes, and a left-back happens to be one of his priorities. With that in mind, Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon has emerged on their radar.

The 25-year-old arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a fee of around £27.5 million from Real Madrid back in 2020. But Reguilon struggled to hold down a regular starting berth at the north London club last season. He made just 25 league appearances for Tottenham during the 2021/22 season.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup coming up later this year, Reguilon needs to play regular first-team football to retain his match fitness and cement his place in the Spanish national team.

Reguilon showed his quality in La Liga during a loan spell with Sevilla before moving to Tottenham. And he could be a quality long-term acquisition for Villarreal. However, it appears that the Yellow Submarine are considering just a loan move for the player, and it remains to be seen whether he can impress Emery enough to secure a permanent move at the end of the season.

It is apparent that the Spaniard is not a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s first team plans at Tottenham. And so, a move away from the north London club would be ideal for all parties. Reguilon was well settled in La Liga prior to his move to the Premier League, and he should be able to make an immediate impact at Villarreal once the move goes through.

Although Tottenham will be hoping to recoup the money they paid for the Spaniard this summer, they will probably have to settle for a loan exit, considering the absence of permanent offers from the player’s suitors.

Villarreal are not the only club looking to sign the Tottenham full-back this summer, and he has been linked with other clubs as well. The report further states that Emery is eyeing up an attacking addition this summer and the former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has been earmarked as a potential option.
