Everton, West Ham United battle Newcastle United for Scott McTominay

Everton, West Ham United and Newcastle United are reportedly vying for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer.

According to a report from 90 min, Everton, Newcastle United, and West Ham United are among five Premier League clubs interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer.

Manchester United’s top priority this summer has been to sign a new central midfielder. They spent a lot of time pursuing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. With a move for Dutchman now looking highly unlikely, the Red Devils have finally looked elsewhere and reached an agreement to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid in a deal worth up to a whopping £70 million.

The Brazilian midfielder is set to sign a four-year contract at Manchester United, with the option to extend it by an additional year. Casemiro’s arrival could have a knock-on effect on McTominay’s game time, with the Scot likely to fall further down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, as Fred and his compatriot have previously struck up a solid partnership on the international stage.

So this could pave the way for the Scottish midfielder to leave Manchester United in search of regular playtime. Everton, West Ham, and Newcastle are all monitoring his situation and are keen on securing his services, alongside fellow top-flight clubs Southampton and Leicester City. There is also some outside interest from Italian and German outfits.

A Manchester United academy graduate, the 25-year-old put in some bright performances in the early stages of his career but has been severely underperforming of late. McTominay’s partnership with Fred last season drew criticism from all quarters and was a major reason for Manchester United’s abysmal campaign last term.

To date, McTominay has made 172 competitive appearances for Manchester United, chipping in with 16 goals and four assists in the process. But the Scot has stagnated at Old Trafford, and a move away from the limelight of the club could help him revitalise his career.

Manchester United are not actively looking to sell the Scotsman, despite receiving a high level of interest in him. It is reported that the Red Devils could allow him to leave on loan for the season, but the player himself has not asked to leave till now. However, things can change rapidly in the transfer market.

Newcastle United, for one, are understood to be ‘long-term admirers’ of McTominay, and Eddie Howe is searching the market for a new midfielder as a replacement for anchor Jonjo Shelvey, who is sidelined until next year due to a knee injury.

However, Newcastle are unlikely to follow up their interest in him this summer, with Sean Longstaff already in their ranks, looking to break into the first team. The same goes for Everton, who have already signed Amadou Onana from Lille in a big-money deal and are showing interest in other midfielders as well.

As for West Ham, David Moyes wants to bring in additional cover for Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek, and he believes McTominay could be a perfect fit to his system with his pressing, work rate, and industry some of his attributes. It will be interesting to see if McTominay leaves Manchester United following Casemiro’s arrival.
