Tottenham join race to sign Trevoh Chalobah

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea in an audacious last-ditch move this summer.

According to a report by London Evening Standard, Trevoh Chalobah is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. The north Londoners have joined AS Roma and Inter Milan in the race to sign the Chelsea defender this summer.

Trevoh Chalobah is a native of Sierra Leone, but he has spent his entire career in Europe. The 23-year-old spent his formative years at Chelsea before graduating from the west London club’s famed academy in 2018. But Chalobah had to wait until the onset of the 2021/22 season to make his debut for Chelsea after his loan stints with Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Lorient.

Chalobah enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign as he turned out 30 times for Chelsea while starting several important games. But the youngster has dropped down the pecking order in the early days of the 2022/23 season despite Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s departures. He was an unused substitute in the games against Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chalobah’s prospects will unlikely improve if Wesley Fofana joins Chelsea, who might acquire the French defender in a world-record move for a defender. The Leicester City centre-back’s arrival will push Chalobah to the bottom of the pecking order. And he is thus considering his Chelsea future, with Tottenham keen on signing him.

Clement Lenglet has already bolstered Tottenham’s central defensive unit following his arrival from Barcelona last month. But with Japhet Tanganga facing an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs need to consider signing another centre-back this summer, bringing Chalobah into the picture.

However, while Chalobah can fit seamlessly in Antonio Conte’s system, he will unlikely be a first-choice centre-back for Tottenham due to Cristian Romero’s presence in the team. But the Chelsea defender will have a few other options to choose from this summer, with AS Roma and Inter Milan keen on signing him.

It will be interesting to see if moving to Tottenham excites Chalobah. With his contract running out in four years, Chelsea will hold the aces when deciding his future. But it will be interesting to see if the 23-year-old looks to embark on a new adventure or fight for his place at Chelsea.
