Atalanta are targeting Tottenham outcast Sergio Reguilon as Gian Piero Gasperini remains keen on a left wing-back in this window.

According to Calciomercato, Atalanta are eyeing a move for Sergio Reguilon, with the Spanish full-back not in Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham. Gian Piero Gasperini has been keen on a left-back throughout the window and could target the former Real Madrid man to solve a problem position.

Two years ago, when Tottenham signed Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid, the Spaniard looked worth every penny the club paid. A bright future was expected for the left-back, with Real Madrid even deciding to include a buy-back clause in theira agreement with Spurs.

Reguilon performed well in the first season but tailed off in the second after Antonio Conte arrived at the club. The Italian seemed to prefer him in his early days at the club but soon realised the Spaniard did not suit the system he wanted to implement at Tottenham.

Conte now prefers Ryan Sessegnon in the left wing-back role, and the arrival of Ivan Perisic on a free transfer all but ended Reguilon’s hopes at the club. The manager omitted Reguilon from the group that travelled to Korea for Tottenham’s pre-season to make things even more apparent, with the Italian now banishing him from first-team training to force him out of the club.

Atalanta are now interested in signing Reguilon, although bringing the Spaniard on a permanent transfer may be out of their budget. The manager of the Italian side, Gian Piero Gasperini, has been keen on a left wing-back since last January when the club sold Robin Gosens to Inter Milan.

Gasperini’s primary target was Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares, who has since joined Marseille on a loan deal. The Portuguese defender suited Atalanta’s style, but they could not convince him or the Gunners to sanction a move.

With the end of the summer window getting closer by the day, very few options are available in the market, and Atalanta are ramping up their pursuit of a new left wing-back. And Reguilon could be their best bet, and the expectation is that an approach could be made over a loan deal.

Conte is keen to see some players leave, including Reguilon and could urge the club to sanction a temporary move if such an offer arrives. Reguilon has a contract until 2025, which has Spurs relaxed about his future value. They could yet recoup a significant sum they paid for the Spaniard two years ago. Whether it would be this summer or next year remains to be seen, but Reguilon could be a good fit for Atalanta.
