Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as they search for a No. 2 for David de Gea.

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are lining up a swoop for Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as Erik ten Hag looks for a backup option for first-choice stopper David de Gea.

Begovic is a vastly experienced goalkeeper, who started his career at Portsmouth and went on several loan spells before joining Stoke City permanently in 2010. He spent five years with the Potters where he established himself as a reliable Premier League goalkeeper before signing for Chelsea in 2015.

After two years, Begovic signed for Bournemouth where he was the first choice in his first two seasons. Following a loan stint with Qarabag, the Bosnian moved to AC Milan on a six-month loan in January 2020 before returning to the Vitality Stadium. After another year with the Cherries, the 35-year-old signed for Everton last summer as a backup for Jordan Pickford.

Begovic played seven games for Everton last season, of which three came in the Premier League. His contract was extended until 2023 earlier this year, but the veteran star could be on his way out this summer, with Manchester United interested in signing him up.

Manchester United allowed Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest on loan this summer after benching him for David de Gea for the past year. It has left them with only Tom Heaton as the backup option for the Spaniard, as Nathan Bishop is likely to leave on loan before the transfer window shuts.

With de Gea’s campaign off to a woeful start, Manchester United are seriously considering bringing in another goalkeeper this summer. A move for Illan Meslier was considered, but Leeds United have no interest in letting him leave this summer. So, they have been forced to look at other options.

An enquiry has been lodged to explore the possibility of signing Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach, who want to tie the Swiss goalie down to a new contract. At the same time, they are also considering a move for Begovic. The 35-year-old is in the final year of his contract and is vastly experienced, with over 250 appearances in the Premier League.

On top of that, Begovic is also considered a homegrown player, which further appeals to interested parties, including Manchester United. However, any move for the Bosnian shot-stopper would depend on Everton finding a replacement for him this late in the transfer window.
