Yorkshire giants Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing 18-year-old Italian international Wilfried Gnonto from FC Zurich this summer.
According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Wilfried Gnonto is the subject of interest from Leeds United over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Whites have been closely monitoring the progress of the 18-year-old Italian international, and an approach could be on the cards.
Wilfried Gnonto spent his formative years in Italy, rising through the ranks at three clubs – Baveno, Suno and Inter Milan. But the teenage wonderkid has earned his breakthrough at the first-team level upon moving to Italy, with his stock climbing at FC Zurich in the last couple of years.
But the 18-year-old has started the 2022/23 season strongly, scoring only one goal in eight outings for FC Zurich thus far. However, Gnonto seems to have a bright future ahead of him, even making his international debut for Italy. The young prodigy’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Leeds United keeping tabs on him in the last couple of years.
The Whites have been in the market for a striker this summer after a challenging 2021/22 season that saw Patrick Bamford miss most of the campaign. While Bamford has regained fitness early in the new term and Rodrigo Moreno has shown top-notch form thus far, Leeds will still need to sign a new centre-forward.
Several strikers have thus popped up on Leeds’s radar in the last few days, with the West Yorkshire club monitoring Ollie Watkins’s situation. And Gnonto has now emerged as a target for Leeds, with the 18-year-old Italian international being one for the future.
The FC Zurich prodigy has his best years well ahead of him, and he might be a solid investment for Leeds United. But the Whites will only launch the offensive for Gnonto if the right opportunity presents itself in the coming days.
Leeds United will not have a shortage of quality options to pursue, with Goncalo Ramos reportedly emerging on their radar. As for the interest in Gnonto, it will be interesting to see if the Whites seriously pursue a move for the 18-year-old Italian international.
