Manchester United have reportedly submitted an enquiry about Mauro Icardi, with PSG likely to entertain offers for the Argentine attacker.

According to GFFN, Manchester United have made informal enquiries for Mauro Icardi as their search for a new striker continues. The Argentine attacker is not in the plans of new Paris Saint-Germain boss Christophe Galtier, making it likely for the Ligue 1 giants to entertain offers in the ongoing transfer window.

Mauro Icardi has never hit the heights of his Inter Milan days at PSG despite being considered a formidable striker amid the presence of many superstars. After impressing on a year-long loan, he completed a £45 million permanent move to Parc des Princes.

However, in the ensuing seasons, the Argentine’s role has reduced as he does not fit in tactically with the ideas PSG have. The Argentine has never posted numbers reminiscent of his first season at the club while only netting four times in 24 Ligue 1 outings.

Under new manager Christophe Galtier, Icardi has no place in the team, and PSG are willing to entertain offers for the Ligue 1 attacker. Moreover, they have signed exciting French teenager Hugo Ekitike, who might take his place permanently if he impresses following his arrival from Reims.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Icardi, with the club’s name being mentioned a while ago. After enduring a tough start to their domestic campaign, the Red Devils are in the market for several quality reinforcements, including a new striker.

They will likely keep Cristiano Ronaldo beyond this month’s transfer deadline and would like a proven goalscorer to deputise for the Portugal international. Manchester United explored using Anthony Martial during pre-season, but the Frenchman continues to struggle with fitness.

Erik ten Hag is keen to recruit an able striker cover, but it may not be easy to find the right talent at this stage of the summer transfer window. Sasa Kalajdzic is being offered to them by intermediaries of the Stuttgart striker, while Manchester United recently called off the controversial pursuit of his international teammate Marko Arnautovic.

Icardi, 29, could be a decent option, as Manchester United have reportedly made informal enquiries regarding his availability. The PSG attacker is somewhat enticed by the prospect of playing in England and might be open to the idea of joining the Red Devils.

PSG already have Marcus Rashford in their sights. Despite Manchester United maintaining their stance of being uninterested in selling him, the Parisians are prepared to offer a long-term contract. They could ponder using the reported Icardi interest in their favour if the conditions are right.

It is unlikely that Manchester United would combine the two moves and may not end up allowing Rashford to leave. However, with Icardi, the situation could be different, as the Argentine international is unwanted by the Ligue 1 champions. A formal offer may arrive before the deadline if their interest is serious.
