Chelsea are reportedly plotting an improved bid for Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as their last attempt to sign the Dutchman this summer.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Chelsea could return with an improved offer for Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries. The Blues are set to hold fresh transfer talks with the Serie A giants over a deal for the Dutch defender in the coming days.
Chelsea’s transfer dealings are picking up momentum as the search for new defenders continues. The Blues have already purchased Kalidou Koulibaly, who has made a strong start to life at Stamford Bridge with a goal. And Marc Cucurella has also arrived for a world record fee for a left-back, as a direct replacement for the outgoing Marcos Alonso to provide competition for Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea are also interested in Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol. Todd Boehly has not been scared off by the hefty price-tags on both players as he turns to more targets. The new Chelsea co-owner made an enquiry to Inter Milan for Denzel Dumfries last month as Tuchel looks to provide Reece James with a backup and keep the option of using the Englishman as a centre-back and provide general cover for Cesar Azpilicueta.
However, their initial proposal was swiftly rejected by the Nerazzurri as they continue to hold out for a fee of around €40 million, a figure that the London giants have yet to match. While the Dutchman has remained on Chelsea’s radar, their pursuit had cooled down in the last week or so as they looked to prioritise other business.
But as per Calciomercato, negotiations between the two clubs for Dumfries are far from over, with the Premier League giants planning to return with a bigger proposal to tempt Inter to sell their prized asset, who still has three-years left on his current San Siro deal.
Dumfries only joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven last summer and made 45 appearances in all competitions last term, racking up five goals and seven assists in the process. It is understandable why Chelsea want Dumfries. The 26-year-old provides excellent width and is often involved in his team’s offensive ventures.
He is adept at playing as a winger, often playing like one even when starting at wing-back. He offers a vital threat with his pace and his superb engine and his ability to produce the right final ball when it is needed. Dumfries is also a clutch goalscorer, as demonstrated by his last-gasp winner for Inter Milan against Lecce in their Serie A opener with his substitution turning the tide of the game.
The Dutch wing-back could be ready to give the green light to a move to Chelsea and accept an offer from the Blues, according to La Repubblica, although it remains to be seen whether or not the English club can make an offer that convinces Inter.
