Manchester City retain interest in Matheus Nunes

Manchester City are reportedly still holding an interest in Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, who is also a target for Liverpool and Wolves.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester City are still keen on signing Sporting CP and Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer. The 23-year-old is also on the radars of their Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Nunes has become a key part of the Sporting CP setup over the past couple of seasons. The young midfielder earned praises from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola during the last season after the two teams met each other in the UEFA Champions League. Following that, there were intense rumours about the Premier League champions wanting to sign the midfielder.

However, the rumours went quiet over the past few months, especially after Manchester City ended up securing the services of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United. But, Plettenberg insists that the Mancunian outfit remain keen on his services, which could be due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Bernardo Silva.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer and could be joining the Blaugrana in the near future. It could open up room in the Manchester City squad for another midfielder, which is where Nunes could enter the picture.

However, Manchester City would have to battle arch-rivals Liverpool, who are also interested in signing the 23-year-old Portuguese international. The Reds are said to be preparing an offer for the Sporting CP ace after Thiago Alcantara picked up an injury which has sidelined him for over a month.

With Jordan Henderson and James Milner into their thirties and the injury woes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool need to refresh their midfield options sooner rather than later, and Nunes has popped up on their radars as an option.

Apart from Manchester City and Liverpool, Wolves have shown a strong interest in signing Nunes this summer. Sporting, for their part, are open to a sale if a bid of around €35 million comes along, although they would want to insert a future sell-on clause in the agreement. What now remains to be seen is who among the three Premier League clubs interested make a move to sign the 23-year-old before the transfer window closes.
