Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in securing the signature of versatile Chelsea star Ethan Ampadu this summer.
According to La Nazionale, Premier League club, Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in securing the signature of Chelsea utility man Ethan Ampadu in the ongoing transfer window.
The Welsh international joined the Blues in 2017 from Exeter City and quickly established himself as one of the best young talents at Cobham. Ampadu made his first team bow for Chelsea at the tender age of 17 against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.
Ampadu penned a five-year deal in 2018, but it has not contributed to him emerging as a senior regular for Chelsea. The youngster has so far made a mere 12 appearances for the west London club. The Welshman has enjoyed three loan spells so far, with the latest one coming at Italian side Venezia in 2021/22.
While his performances were not enough to save Venezia from relegation, he was one of the club’s best performers of the season. Now back at Chelsea, Ampadu is far from assured of a defining role in the 2022/23 campaign.
Another move away from Stamford Bridge might be in order, and Wolves have now joined the hunt for the 21-year-old utility man. Bruno Lage enjoyed a promising debut season at the Molineux and will do well to add to his squad this summer. A solid defensive side, it could help the Chelsea man refine his ability in the Premier League.
Primarily a centre-back, Ampadu is capable of playing in several other positions. This versatility gives Tuchel and potentially Lage plenty of options regarding how to deploy him. A solid tackler, the 21-year-old is a good passer of the ball and is also capable of thriving in a side that likes to keep possession.
Reasonably experienced given his age, Ampadu has all the ability in his locker to develop into a reliable player. Strong in the air and an able passer, the Chelsea utility man can also do a job as a defensive midfielder, providing a defensive screen to the rearguard.
Signing Ampadu will give Wolves a dynamic presence in the middle of the park. His ability to also retain possession and find a through pass makes him a difference maker for a side that operates on the counter. This ability to release the ball quickly could make him stand out in a side that lacks the cutting edge.
Whether Wolves’ interest is limited to taking the player on loan or a permanent deal remains unclear. With just weeks to go before the summer transfer window shuts, the onus is on Lage and co. to make their move. But with several Serie A clubs keen on signing Ampadu, Wolves need to act fast to sign the Chelsea utility man this summer.
