Stade Rennais winger Jeremy Doku is reportedly being monitored by Premier League giants Chelsea this summer.
Simon Phillips has claimed on the Si & Dan Talk Chelsea podcast that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Stade Rennais winger Jeremy Doku. The 20-year-old attacker has previously been courted by the likes of Newcastle United and Liverpool and still has three years left on his contract with the Ligue 1 club.
Jeremy Doku joined Stade Rennais in the 2020 summer transfer window from Belgian giants Anderlecht and has since had two underwhelming seasons with the Ligue 1 club. Multiple injuries derailed his 2021/22 campaign, limiting him to just 18 appearances for the French outfit across all competitions.
In all, the 20-year-old has played 56 matches for Rennes, scoring four times and assisting six goals. But at 20 years of age, Doku still has time to continue his development and emerge a better player in the upcoming season.
After nothing materialised from Liverpool’s and Newcastle United’s previous interest, Chelsea have jumped into the transfer market for Doku and are keeping tabs on the young attacker. The Blues have been on the lookout for attacking additions following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.
Both the strikers left for their former clubs. While Lukaku has returned to Inter Milan on a year-long loan deal, Werner has re-joined RB Leipzig permanently after two sub-par seasons at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have so far just signed Raheem Sterling from Manchester City to address the issues in the final third but are still on the lookout for more additions.
The west Londoners were linked with a shock move for Cristiano Ronaldo, who wants to leave Manchester United in search of UEFA Champions League football. But the Blues decided against a move when manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his reservations about Ronaldo’s addition to his current squad.
Red Bull Salzburg’s highly-rated striker Benjamin Sesko was on their radar as well, and Manchester United also pursued the Slovenian international. But the young attacker has instead signed a pre-contract with Red Bull Salzburg’s sister club RB Leipzig and will join them next year. Meanwhile, Wilfried Zaha is also a target for Chelsea and might become a top option if Doku simply remains on their radar.
