RB Leipzig closing in on signing Timo Werner

RB Leipzig are reportedly getting closer to re-signing Timo Werner from Chelsea, with the striker willing to take a pay cut to return to Germany.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Chelsea striker Timo Werner is inching closer to a return to former club RB Leipzig in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Werner left Leipzig to join Chelsea in the summer of 2020, but the move has bombed spectacularly. The 26-year-old has failed to showcase the form that once made him one of the most sought-after centre-forwards in the whole of Europe. In his two seasons in England, the striker has produced a sub-par tally of 23 goals and 21 assists from 89 matches.

Werner is no longer guaranteed a starting berth in Thomas Tuchel’s side due to his profligacy in front of goal. And with Chelsea signing Raheem Sterling and planning to bring in another forward, the German international will be rendered surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. With the World Cup on the horizon, the 26-year-old is keen on playing regularly and is ready to secure a move away as a result.

Werner has attracted interest from Newcastle United and Real Madrid but it is his former club, RB Leipzig, who have emerged as the frontrunners to secure the signing of the German forward.

RB Leipzig opened talks with the Chelsea forward last week while they have also been in negotiations with the Blues over the possibility of a move. The striker is said to be keen on a return to the Red Bull Arena and is even willing to take a drastic pay cut to secure a move back to his old stomping grounds.

As per the latest update, RB Leipzig are inching closer and closer to re-signing Werner, with talks seemingly running at ‘full speed’. The Saxony-based outfit are open to both loan and permanent transfer options and are awaiting a decision from Chelsea manager Tuchel before they can complete the transfer.

Werner is a top talent but has failed to settle into Chelsea’s tactics and system. A return to his former club could help him recapture his best form, while Chelsea would be freeing up space on their roster to sign a player who can be a better fit into Tuchel’s system for the upcoming campaign.
