In a blow for Chelsea, Serge Gnabry is reportedly considering Bayern Munich’s latest proposal for a contract extension.
A recent tweet from Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the future of Serge Gnabry. The Bayern Munich frontman has become a subject of interest for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who is desperately looking to shore up his attacking options out wide.
The Premier League giants had made a tentative approach for Gnabry this week, but it appears the winger is favouring a prolonged stay at Bayern Munich. While he is aware of Chelsea’s interest, the German attacker is currently attracted by the Bundesliga champions’ latest proposal, and the two parties are currently locked in negotiations over a contract extension.
Gnabry’s current contract in Bavaria expires at the end of next season. The 27-year-old joined the Bundesliga club back in 2018. And after successful loan spells at TSG Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen, he has established himself as one of the finest performances for Bayern Munich.
The German winger has racked up a total of 64 goals and 40 assists in 171 competitive appearances for the club. Yet, Gnabry is currently not paid as highly as some of the other Bayern Munich attackers including Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane and the new signing Sadio Mane.
It has led to speculation over the future of Gnabry, with even Real Madrid among the clubs interested in securing his services. However, while Bayern Munich were initially reluctant to meet his contract demands, there has been a recent shift in stance, with the Bundesliga giants offering the attacker a new proposal.
Gnabry is attracted by the new terms offered as well, leading to the belief that the player may end up remaining at the Allianz Arena. This serves as a massive blow for Chelsea, who were never in contention to sign the German international, not only because of Bayern’s offer but also due to his close connection with Arsenal.
Hence, it is perhaps the wiser option for Chelsea to set their sights on other alternatives this summer. The Premier League giants have already roped in Raheem Sterling from Manchester Citym and it appears Tuchel has no shortage of other attacking targets either.
Apart from Gnabry, Chelsea have been in contention to sign AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, who could be an ideal replacement for Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian international returned to Inter Milan on a loan deal.
