Manchester United youngster Brandon Williams has reportedly emerged as a target for Premier League club Southampton.

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, Southampton are in the market for a new left-back this summer. They are exploring multiple options right now, including Manchester United starlet Brandon Williams, who has been identified as the ideal man to add more cover to the position.

A product of the Manchester United academy, Williams is coming on the back of a year-long loan spell at Norwich City. Although the youngster was part of the backline that recorded the worst defensive numbers in the league, he was able to muster regular game-time and is coming back with loads of experience in Premier League football.

Williams was even hoping to make a case for his breakthrough at Old Trafford ahead of the new season. However, Manchester United’s new coach Erik ten Hag poured water over his plans by bringing in Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, thus shoring up his options in the left-back department.

Therefore, a move away from Old Trafford could in the offing for young Williams. The 21-year-old may fancy going on yet another loan expedition to a mid-table Premier League side, and that is where Southampton come into the fray.

As mentioned earlier, the Saints are running a little thin in the left-back unit. They have Romain Perraud as their only recognised option in the position, thus accentuating the need for a new face. Brandon Williams fits the bill well for Southampton given his talent and athleticism, coupled with the pedigree of performing at the highest level of football.

At the age of just 21, the Manchester United youth academy has shown impressive ingenuity. He certainly has what it takes to thrive at Southampton, who are known for their aggressive brand of play and the ability to catch the opposition by surprise. The Englishman’s speed and athleticism could tune in well, in that regard.

Manchester United, though, will be reluctant about offloading Williams on a permanent deal given his untapped potential. As such, it won’t be surprising to see Red Devils sanctioning a loan deal for the 21-year-old, who will be keen on making a bigger breakthrough in the Premier League before fighting for his place in the Manchester United setup.
