Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to complete the £15 million signing of Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are closer than ever to completing a deal for Middlesbrough’s highly-rated right-back Djed Spence. Spurs have agreed on an initial fee of £15 million with Boro, with up to £5 million constituting add-ons.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the English full-back and have tracked him all summer. The young defender spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the EFL Championship and impressed many with his performances. Spence helped them gain promotion to the Premier League, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

Tottenham were among the first teams to register interest in the 21-yer-old, who has two years left on his contract with Middlesbrough. Nottingham Forest were keen to sign Spence permanently as well, but Spurs were more appealing with UEFA Champions League football on offer as well.

Antonio Conte currently has Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty as his two right wing-back options, but it has been widely reported that both the players do not feature extensively in the Italian’s plans. Emerson has been linked with Juventus and Atletico Madrid, which could pave way for Spence in the first-team squad at Tottenham.

Tottenham have been fairly active in the transfer market and are backing the manager to produce the goods next season. So far, four players have arrived at the north London club, and more are set to join them in the coming weeks, with Spence likely to be their fifth summer arrival.

Ivan Perisic was the first to join them on a free transfer from Inter Milan, followed by Fraser Forster from Southampton. Yves Bissouma was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of around £25 million, followed by Richarlison’s arrival from Everton, with the Brazilian international being one of Tottenham’s most expensive signings ever.

As iterated, if Spence does join the Tottenham shortly, he will become the north London club’s fifth acquisition of the summer, setting them up nicely for the pre-season with all major targets in the bag. The Lilywhites are hopeful of seeing the deal through.
