Manchester City battle Manchester United for Serge Gnabry

Manchester City and Manchester United are reportedly closely watching Serge Gnabry as he refuses to sign a new contract with Bayern Munich.

According to The Sun, Manchester City and Manchester United are keeping tabs on Serge Gnabry’s situation at Bayern Munich. If things work out against the Bavarians, they could look to sell the Germany international, with the two Premier League heavyweights likely to submit enquiries for the ex-Arsenal forward.

Serge Gnabry being available for a reported £35 million would be a brilliant coup for any top club in England. The German international has forged a solid reputation since joining Bayern Munich, and his experience playing in the Premier League with Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion would entice many top clubs.

An exciting situation is brewing in Bavaria, as Gnabry has so far refused to commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich. The former Arsenal forward has twelve months left on his current deal and has remained defiant about signing a new deal, meaning clubs from the Premier League have been alerted to his possible availability.

Bayern Munich are reportedly willing to cash in on him if talks go no further. They could seek an amount close to £35 million for the German winger, who could become an exciting option for some of the top English clubs. Many are eyeing a move in 2023 when he could be a free agent. Others, however, are eyeing a solid opportunity in the current window.

Liverpool had reportedly held talks, while Real Madrid contemplated a move for the 26-year-old. However, Manchester City and Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the winger in the current window, and the respective clubs could make a possible approach to Bayern Munich.

Bayern reportedly offered new terms worth £200,000 per week, which Gnabry deems short of his expectations. However, the German international is one of the top attacking talents in world football right now and believes his value is worth more than the current Bayern offer.

Manchester City are in talks with Chelsea for the sale of Raheem Sterling, and Pep Guardiola could look at Gnabry as a possible replacement. While other players in the current squad could offset the departure of the English international, adding a talent such as the ex-Arsenal attacker would elevate the quality of the Manchester City first team.

Manchester United have been chasing Antony for the best part of this window. However, the Brazilian’s valuation could be deemed unreasonable, with Ajax reportedly asking for around £70 million from the Red Devils. Gnabry could be considered a low-cost player at £35 million and a quality addition on the right side of the attack.

Manchester United struggled last season without a recognised right-winger for most of the campaign. The introduction of Anthony Elanga in the role may have been good, but they need a quality, long-term solution there. Gnabry could become this player to shore up the front three.

If Bayern are to make their intention to sell Gnabry clear, Manchester City, Manchester United and a host of other sides are likely to battle it out for Gnabry. There could be an off chance he would like a return to Arsenal, where he spent his developmental years. But financially the Gunners may not be able to match the Manchester clubs.
