Leeds United face Rangers competition for James McAtee

Scottish Premier League giants Rangers to battle it out with Leeds United to take Manchester City starlet James McAtee on loan this summer.

According to The Sun, Scottish giants Rangers are intent on landing Manchester City sensation James McAtee on loan in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old is one of the best young prospects in the Manchester City setup and could do with first-team action to accelerate his development. Given the riches of talent at Pep Guardiola’s disposal, the chances of him gaining that at the Etihad is unlikely.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are long-term admirers of the youngster and failed to take him on loan last January. They are now keen to succeed on their second attempt and sign McAtee. A central midfielder, he could slot in right into a side that fell one step short of glory in last season’s UEFA Europa League final.

A good passer of the ball, McAtee can also be deployed in an attacking role, given his excellent movement. While there are certain chinks in the armour that needs to be honed, the Gers might land themselves a player who can make a telling difference. McAtee has, so far, made six appearances for Manchester City’s first team, a testament to his ability as a footballer.

The 19-year-old has no shortage of options with fellow Premier League side Leeds United also keen. Jesse Marsch’s side are keen to rebuild after a poor 2021/22 campaign and central midfield is an area that needs reinforcements. This is especially so given their impending sale of Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City.

The English international’s move to the Etihad could prove to be beneficial for Leeds in their pursuit of McAtee. Whether City will send the youngster on loan remains to be seen. A move to Elland Road would be a win-win for all parties. Leeds add a promising midfielder to their ranks while City will see a player they clearly rate develop. The youngster, for his part, will benefit from Premier League minutes.

McAtee recently signed a three-year deal that will keep him in Manchester for the foreseeable future. The onus will now be on the 19-year-old to prove his salt. While Rangers could offer him regular minutes, Leeds will offer him Premier League experience. With several other clubs also in the running, there is a decision to be made, and time will tell which way McAtee tilts towards.
