Manchester United are reportedly set to beat Lyon in the race to sign Feyenoord full-back Tyrell Malacia this summer.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are closing in on the capture of Tyrell Malacia. They have reached an agreement over personal terms with the Feyenoord full-back, who is expected to pen a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option to extend it for a further year.

Although the deal has not yet been signed, Malacia is expected to fly to Manchester to complete his medical with Manchester United. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have reportedly reach an agreement with Feyenoord over the transfer fee. They are expected to pay a fixed fee of €15 million, with an additional €2 million to be paid through add-ons.

If everything proceeds smoothly, Malacia is set to become the first signing for Manchester United under the leadership of new coach Erik ten Hag. The Dutch defender had been keeping tabs on the Feyenoord defender throughout the summer and will be delighted to have bagged his services ahead of the new season.

From a sporting perspective, Malacia could prove to be an excellent competitor for Luke Shaw and Alex Telles for the left-back berth at Manchester United. Neither left-back has been able to make an impression at Old Trafford over the past 12 months, with the latter being reportedly linked with a move to FC Porto earlier in the summer.

With 136 competitive appearances for Feyenoord and five caps for the Netherlands national team, Malacia is an emerging player who has turned many heads with his performances in the Eredivisie. His pace, work ethic and attacking contributions out wide make him an ideal asset for ten Hag, as he looks to lay down his philosophy at Manchester United.

The report from The Athletic suggests Manchester United were determined to sign Malacia ahead of Lyon. The French club were reportedly ahead in the chase by offering a cash sum of €13 million, but Manchester United were able to hi-jack the deal at the last minute by producing an improved offer for the Dutch defender.

With the Malacia deal almost done and dusted, the Red Devils are now expected to shift their focus on the pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. Reports indicate the Premier League giants have an agreement with Barcelona over transfer fee, but convincing the player to move to Old Trafford could be tricky, as the club are not in a position to offer Champions League football next season.
