Tottenham and Middlesbrough are reportedly conducting advanced talks for the transfer of Djed Spence, with the deal likely to cost £15 million.

According to Keith Downie, Tottenham are closing in on signing Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, and the transfer could be completed in the coming days. Talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage, with the deal likely to cost Spurs around £15 million.

Djed Spence’s successful 2021/22 campaign with Nottingham Forest had led to heavy speculation around his immediate future. The English full-back was on a season-long loan deal and helped the club achieve promotion to the Premier League, subsequently attracting interest from top clubs.

At one point, few of the biggest Premier League clubs were considering a move for the right-back, but Tottenham put themselves ahead of the queue after expressing their desire to land the Middlesbrough loanee. And Spence has always been open to the idea of playing under Antonio Conte, meaning the negotiations have gone smoothly.

Arsenal were briefly linked with the 21-year-old, but Tottenham quickly emerged as clear favourites for the Middlesbrough defender. Spurs have conducted exceptional business in the window, bringing in necessary players.

Ivan Perisic was the first to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer from Inter Milan, followed by goalkeeper Fraser Forster and then midfielder Yves Bissouma. Tottenham most recently made headlines after signing Richarlison from Everton in a big move, and Conte wants to see the spree continue.

Conte is keen to build a squad to his specifications after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The arrival of Richarlison is considered vital to bolster Tottenham’s attacking options, but they still need a centre-back and a new right wing-back.

Tottenham and Middlesbrough remain in advanced talks over a deal for Spence, with a £15 million move expected to be concluded in the coming days. The English full-back will be a shrewd addition to a team that already has Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal in the position.

Either of the duo may leave the club this summer, as Conte wants to develop young players in the position on either flank. Ryan Sessegnon had usurped Sergio Reguilon on the left-hand side and become Conte’s preferred choice on that wing.

Spence is a powerful right-back, and his qualities could massively benefit Tottenham next season. There could be some areas for improvement in is game, but Conte could be the man to develop him into one of the best in the position in the coming years.
