Atletico Madrid activate Antoine Griezmann clause

Antoine Griezmann will spend the 2022/23 season on loan at Atletico Madrid, with the Colchoneros reportedly activating a clause in their deal with Barcelona.

According to a report by Catalunya Radio, Antoine Griezmann will spend another season on loan at Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros have activated a clause in their deal with Barcelona, meaning the French forward will stay at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2022/23 before possibly joining Los Rojiblancos permanently next year.

Antoine Griezmann has suffered a dramatic fall from grace in the last few years, going from one of the best players in the world to a shell of his best version. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner was once rated in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but his performance levels have dropped drastically since joining Barcelona in July 2019.

After two inconsistency-riddled campaigns with Barcelona, Griezmann returned to Atletico Madrid on loan last summer. But the 31-year-old managed only eight goals and seven assists in 39 outings across all competitions. However, that has not done much to dissuade Atletico Madrid from adding another year in his loan deal.

The French international will likely grow in stature at Atletico Madrid following Luis Suarez’s departure from the Wanda Metropolitano as a free agent. The former Barcelona striker was one of the candidates for the two central berths in Diego Simeone’s system.

Griezmann will now compete with Joao Felix, Matheus Cunha and Angel Correa, with Correa facing an uncertain future at Atletico Madrid. The Barcelona loanee is reportedly keen on rejoining Los Rojiblancos permanently, but that will have to wait until next year’s summer transfer window.

For now, the Colchoneros have activated a clause in his loan deal which will see them enjoy the services of the 31-year-old forward on loan for the 2022/23 season. And if Griezmann plays satisfies a certain criteria, he will be able to join Atletico Madrid permanently for €40 million.

The French international has also attracted interest from several other clubs in La Liga, with Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Sociedad keen on signing him. But the Barcelona loanee will stay at Atletico Madrid and is set to spend the 2022/23 season at the Wanda Metropolitano.
