Sergio Romero reportedly wants to seal a return to Manchester United following Dean Henderson’s move to Nottingham Forest.

According to Manchester Evening News, Sergio Romero is gunning for a return to Manchester United. The veteran Argentine goalkeeper is well aware of the club’s search for a new understudy to David de Gea and is open to the opportunity of returning to Old Trafford, two years after his initial departure.

Romero had initially joined Manchester United back in 2015. He was brought in by Louis van Gaal in order to serve as the primary backup for de Gea. The Argentine took on the responsibility with aplomb, making an impression whenever he was handed the opportunity in the first team.

Romero was quite unfortunate to have de Gea as his competitor, as the Spaniard was at the top of his game at the time and was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It led to a lack of game-time for the veteran shot-stopper, who left Manchester United last summer, in favour of a free transfer to Venezia.

The 35-year-old served as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Serie A outfit before eventually picking up a knee injury. He played in 16 league matches in total but is now looking for a new club after his contract in Venice expired at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

As per the report, Romero is eyeing a rather ambitious return to Manchester United this summer. He was not particularly happy with the way things ended for him at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer forcing him to train with the reserves. Romero now wants to right the wrongs by sealing a return to the Theatre of Dreams.

Romero’s desire to return to Manchester United comes ahead of Dean Henderson’s impending move to Nottingham Forest. The Englishman will join the newly-promoted Premier League outfit on loan this summer, essentially leaving Erik ten Hag devoid of a reliable alternative for David de Gea in goal.

While Manchester United have been linked with a move for Watford shot-stopper Daniel Bachmann, Sergio Romero could be a far more sensible option due to his vast experience at the highest level of football. He is also familiar with life in Manchester and will not cost a fortune, making him a cost-effective alternative in Manchester United’s bid to find a new goalkeeper this summer.
