Southampton eyeing Levi Colwill move

Southampton are reportedly keeping a close watch on talented young Chelsea prodigy Levi Colwill this summer.

According to talkSPORT, Premier League side Southampton are keen to land Chelsea defender Levi Colwill in the summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old prodigy has been with the Blues since 2011 and steadily rose through the ranks at Cobham in the last few years. However, he is yet to feature for the Chelsea senior side, and for all his potential remains uncapped for the first team.

Colwill has instead been loaned out to secure senior minutes and enjoyed a successful spell at Huddersfield Town in the 2021/22 season. The Chelsea wonderkid enjoyed a promising stint at the Kirklees Stadium only for it to come to a rather anticlimactic end.

The Terriers were one win away from clinching the Championship play-off final and seal a return to the Premier League only for Colwill’s own goal to hand Nottingham Forest the plaudits at Wembley. While it was a cruel way for the 19-year-old to end his spell at Huddersfield, one cannot downplay his contributions to getting them there in the first place.

This has not gone unnoticed, with Southampton keeping close tabs on his situation. The exits of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger mean that there are spots available on the centre-back roster at Chelsea. However, despite plans to take a look at Colwill in pre-season, he is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

A good tackler who is also capable of bringing the ball out of defence, Colwill should fit in well at St. Mary’s. Ralph Hasenhuttl has a reputation for improving young players, and the Chelsea starlet could benefit from regular playtime under the Austrian tactician.

Southampton are keen to add to their centre-back options this summer and have already brought in one defender in Armel Bella-Kotchap. With one of Mohammed Salisu, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek and Lyanco set to be sold, the Saints will need to bring in another defender. While he has rough edges to iron out, Colwill remains a player with huge untapped potential.

Staying at Stamford Bridge is unlikely to garner him enough playtime. A move to another Premier League club could be just what Colwill needs to rekindle his development. Moving to St. Mary’s has proven to be an inspired decision for Chelsea starlets of late.

Armando Broja (on loan) and Tino Livramento have impressed since joining Southampton and are among the best young players in the Premier League today. Given Colwill’s ability, there is little reason to believe that he cannot follow in their footsteps by leaving Chelsea and joining the Saints.
