Brentford interested in signing Martin Braithwaite

Premier League club Brentford will reportedly look to secure the services of Barcelona outcast Martin Braithwaite in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Martin Braithwaite is the subject of interest from Brentford over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Danish international will likely leave Barcelona ahead of the 2022/23 season, and the Bees are ready to pounce.

Martin Braithwaite completed a controversial transfer when he joined Barcelona from CD Leganes in February 2020. The 31-year-old has since been a backup option at Camp Nou, with none of Quique Setien, Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernandez utilising him regularly.

The Danish international endured a frustrating 2021/22 season, managing only 236 minutes of game-time in four appearances, scoring twice. With Braithwaite’s stock plummeting at Camp Nou and Barcelona hot on the heels of Robert Lewandowski, he could do with a change of scenery in the summer transfer window. And he could return to England, with Brentford a potential destination.

The interest from Brentford is intriguing, considering they have a few solid attackers in the first-team squad in Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbuemo, and Yoane Wissa. But Braithwaite could be a solid addition to help Thomas Frank be less dependent on Toney heading into the 2022/23 season.

Brentford will be eager to avoid the dreaded “second season syndrome”, and signing the Barcelona outcast might be a step in the right direction. Braithwaite will also add to the Bees’ booming Danish contingent, including head coach Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen.

Reuniting with his compatriots might help Braithwaite settle down at the Brentford Community Stadium quickly. But the Bees are not the only Premier League club keen on signing the 31-year-old from Barcelona, with Brighton & Hove Albion also considering a loan move in the summer transfer window.

In addition, Braithwaite is a target for several La Liga clubs, including Celta Vigo and Valencia. With Barcelona keen on signing Lewandowski, Braithwaite does not seem to have much of a future at Camp Nou. And it will be interesting to see if the Barcelona outcast becomes the latest Dane to move to Brentford.
