Manchester United are reportedly closely monitoring the situation of 30-year-old Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United are among the clubs interested in securing the services of Stefan de Vrij. Although their interest is far from concrete, they are keeping tabs on the 30-year-old defender’s uncertain future at Inter Milan, with his current contract with the Serie A giants expiring at the end of next season.

Inter Milan have entertained the prospect of signing newer defensive stars in the summer. They are even in pole position to secure the services of Gleison Bremer from Torino. The Brazilian’s potential arrival could fuel rumours of de Vrij’s future at the club, as the defender looks for a newer challenge elsewhere.

Since joining the Serie A club in 2018, de Vrij has made 164 competitive appearances for Inter. The 30-year-old has emerged as the defensive leader of a back three that has proven to be hugely successful in recent years, even playing a key role in helping the club secure the Scudetto in 2021.

It comes as no surprise why de Vrij has not been the only Inter defender to be linked with a move away from the club this summer. The Serie A giants are also facing a battle to keep hold of Alessandro Bastoni, amid interest from Tottenham, while Milan Skriniar has been targeted by Chelsea and Manchester United.

As the most experienced of the three, however, de Vrij has garnered a lot of attention. The Dutchman has emerged as an appealing target for clubs like Manchester United, who are in dire need of stability at the back following the underwhelming performances of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

The Red Devils are bracing themselves for the exit of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones as well. A move to Lyon has been mooted for Bailly, whose exit could pave the way for Manchester United to sign a new centre-back.

That is where Stefan de Vrij comes into the fray. With over 200 appearances in Serie A and 57 caps for his country, the 30-year-old defender offers vast experience at the highest level. He further offers leadership qualities and his ability to read the game could make him an ideal defensive partner for Raphael Varane at Manchester United in the coming season.

With his contract expiring in 2023, de Vrij is not expected to cost a fortune either, potentially making the Dutchman an absolute bargain for Manchester United ahead of the new season.
