Real Madrid had reportedly considered signing 22-year-old Italian international Sandro Tonali before zeroing in on Aurelien Tchouameni this summer.

According to reputed French journalist Santi Aouna, Sandro Tonali was briefly the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. But the Merengues shifted their attention from the 22-year-old Italian international to Aurelien Tchouameni.

Sandro Tonali is one of the brightest young midfielders, with the player drawing comparisons with a certain Andrea Pirlo during his days in the Brescia academy. The youngster’s stock has risen further since joining AC Milan. The Rossoneri had initially signed him on a season-long loan deal before converting it to a permanent transfer last summer.

The 22-year-old has turned out 82 times for AC Milan in the last two years, with his performances at the club level also earning him his debut for the Italian national team. And Tonali’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with one of the biggest clubs in Europe – Real Madrid – closely monitoring his progress.

Real Madrid entered 2022 with the mission of signing a central midfielder in a second successive summer transfer window. And that expedition will end soon, with AS Monaco midfield general Aurelien Tchouameni on the brink of completing a big-money move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

But Real Madrid faced a possible hijack from Paris Saint-Germain for some time. And that might have prompted them to consider alternatives. One such option on Los Blancos’ radar was Sandro Tonali. According to Santi Aouna, Real Madrid weighed up the prospect of landing the 22-year-old Italian international before zeroing in on Tchouameni.

Casemiro is on the wrong side of 30, while Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are approaching the end of their glittering careers. So Real Madrid needed to sign a dynamic midfielder capable of reprising different roles in the middle of the park. While Tchouameni fits the bill perfectly, so did Tonali.

Tonali’s representatives even met Real Madrid in May, but AC Milan’s unwillingness to sell the 22-year-old Italian international forced Los Blancos to go back to Tchouameni. While the Frenchman is yet to join Real Madrid officially, the completion of the transfer is a matter of when, not if, right now.
