Manchester United forward and soon-to-be free agent Edinson Cavani is attracting interest from clubs in Mexico ahead of the summer window.

According to 90 Min, Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani could end up playing in Mexico next season as Liga MX trio Club America, Toluca and Monterrey have expressed an interest in signing him in the summer.

Cavani joined Manchester United as a free agent in the summer of 2020 after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain had expired. The 35-year-old enjoyed a productive debut season in England, bagging 17 goals that helped Manchester United finish second in the Premier League and make it to the finals of the UEFA Europa League.

However, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer had a major impact on Cavani’s game-time during the 2021/22 campaign. The veteran striker also struggled with several injury and fitness issues, as a result of which he played just 20 times across all competitions, in which he scored two goals.

Cavani’s contract with Manchester United expires at the end of this month, and the striker has already confirmed his departure from Old Trafford. Set to become a free agent in the summer, the 35-year-old Uruguayan international is attracting serious interest from several clubs not only from within Europe but outside as well.

Indeed, Cavani is in talks with Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, while he is also courting interest from Italian outfit Fiorentina. There have been links with sides in Argentina, and now Mexican teams have also entered the fray for the signing of the veteran Manchester United star.

Toluca, Club America and Monterrey have all expressed an interest in signing Cavani on a free transfer this summer. Reports in Mexico also claim that Toluca have shown the strongest interest in the veteran forward, with the 35-year-old’s entourage also holding talks with the club over a move.

It is further claimed that Cavani is demanding a massive contract worth $8 million per year (£6.4 million per year), which would be $5 million less than what he used to make at Manchester United. If any of the interested parties meet those demands, it would make the Uruguayan international the best-paid player in Mexico ahead of UANL Tigers’ Florian Thauvin, who earns around $6 million.
