Real Madrid retain Rayan Cherki interest

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly closely monitoring the progress of 18-year-old French wonderkid Rayan Cherki at Lyon.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Rayan Cherki is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the future. The Merengues are closely monitoring the progress of the 18-year-old French wonderkid at Lyon.

Rayan Cherki is one of the brightest young prospects in France, with many considering him one of Lyon’s best-ever prospects. The teenage prodigy joined Les Gones from Saint-Priest in 2010 before making swift progress in the Ligue 1 club’s academy.

The 18-year-old broke into the first-team setup at the Groupama Stadium in October 2019 aged 16. Cherki has since progressed considerably, although he is yet to become a mainstay in the attack for Lyon. The French wonderkid has amassed nine goals and ten assists in 63 appearances for Lyon. But he faces an uncertain future at the Ligue 1 club as his contract will run out next year, which has alerted Real Madrid.

Cherki admittedly dreams about joining Real Madrid, who have been tracking his progress for years. The teenage sensation first caught the attention of Los Blancos when Zinedine Zidane was at the helm at the Santiago Bernabeu. The former French international had wanted to have Cherki at his disposal, but a move never materialised.

While Zidane is no longer at Real Madrid, the Spanish giants have continued to closely monitor the 18-year-old progress. And the French wonderkid has popped up on Real Madrid’s agenda again ahead of the 2022/23 season as the Merengues chalk out plans for the summer transfer window.

Several prodigious prospects have emerged on Real Madrid’s radar of late, with Paris Saint-Germain whizkid Warren Zaire-Emery recently appearing as a target. And Cherki could be a worthy investment for Los Blancos, considering he can play across the attacking line.

Gabriel Jesus has recently become a key target for Real Madrid to bolster the attacking unit. But Cherki can offer more years to the Spanish giants, although the report does not mention whether they are ready to launch the offensive for the 18-year-old Lyon wonderkid this summer. It will be interesting to see if Cherki realises his dream of joining Real Madrid.
