Bayern Munich rival Manchester United for Denzel Dumfries

Bayern Munich and Manchester United are reportedly set to go head to head in the race to sign Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries this summer.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Inter Milan are facing a fierce battle in their bid to keep hold of Denzel Dumfries. The 24-year-old wing-back has become a top target for Manchester United this summer, while Bayern Munich are also involved in the chase, as they look to prise the youngster away from Inter.

With Ivan Perisic joining Tottenham, the Nerazzurri have already lost one of their key wing-backs this summer. The Serie A giants are now on the verge of losing another, in the form of Dumfries.

The Dutchman, formerly of PSV Eindhoven, had joined the club last summer. He was coming on the back of an impressive Euro 2020 campaign and was brought in as a direct replacement for Achraf Hakimi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a big-money move.

In his first season at the Serie A club, Dumfries has racked up five goals and five assists in 33 league matches. The 24-year-old initially endured a difficult start to life in Italy, but soon became a vital player for Simone Inzaghi. His contributions, though, were not enough to help Inter successfully defend the league title.

Nevertheless, Dumfries’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United among the clubs keen on securing his services. It appears new coach Erik ten Hag is keen on upgrading his options at right-back, especially in light of Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s poor campaign.

The former Crystal Palace starlet has been put up for sale already, with ten Hag now targeting Dumfries. The Dutchman can offer the attacking support that was missing from Manchester United’s full-backs this past season. He is also athletic enough to get to grips with the fast-paced nature of the Premier League, making him a shrewd option for the club.

Manchester United, though, are set to face stiff competition from Bayern Munich. The Bavarians have already signed Noussair Mazraoui on a free transfer earlier this summer. But it seems Julian Nagelsmann wants to shore up his options further and sign Dumfries.

The Inter Milan star can offer competition for Mazraoui and serve as a backup for wingers such as Serge Gnabry. Bayern, though, are unlikely to splash the cash on another defender, considering their apparent need for a star striker, in light of Robert Lewandowski’s likely move to FC Barcelona.

It leaves Manchester United in pole position to sign Dumfries, but whether or not the Red Devils are willing to meet Inter’s demands, remains to be seen.
