Barcelona table fresh contract offer for Gavi

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly lodged their latest contract offer for 17-year-old Spanish wonderkid Gavi.

According to reputed Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ivan de la Pena, Gavi’s agent, has finally received a new contract offer from Barcelona. The 17-year-old wonderkid faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou heading into the summer transfer window, but talks between the two parties will enter an important juncture.

Gavi has benefitted from Barcelona’s financial crisis, with the Blaugrana handing him his first-team debut at the onset of the 2021/22 season. The Spanish prodigy, who joined Barcelona from Real Betis over half a dozen years ago, has gone from strength to strength in the last ten months, establishing himself as a mainstay in midfield for club and country.

The 17-year-old wonderkid turned out 47 times for Barcelona this past season, chipping in with two goals and six assists. But Gavi’s future has been up in the air for several weeks, as his contract runs out next year, and developments on the renewal front have been slow. Such a situation has also captured the attention of several high profile clubs across Europe.

Premier League heavyweights Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked heavily with Gavi. At the same time, recent reports suggested that Barcelona’s struggles to tie the teenage prodigy to a new contract have prompted them to consider offering him in the deal to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

Gavi’s reluctance to commit his long-term future to Barcelona has hampered the Catalan club’s prospects of keeping hold of the 17-year-old. But things might take a turn for the better in the coming weeks, with Barcelona finally submitting an improved contract offer to the young midfielder.

The two parties had been in a stalemate for weeks, with Gavi’s agent Ivan de la Pena recently suggesting that Barcelona had not submitted a desired contract offer. Meanwhile, Joan Laporta’s recent comments might have left a sour taste in their mouths, even though Gavi has wanted to stay put at Camp Nou.

According to Fabrizio Romano, talks between Gavi and Barcelona will enter an important juncture, and there is a sense of optimism at Camp Nou. It will be interesting to see if the stalemate finally ends in the coming weeks.
