Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been handed the opportunity to sign 27-year-old West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek.
According to a report from Football Insider, a change of scenery could be in the offing for West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek. It appears the 27-year-old does not have a healthy relationship with coach David Moyes and the club, in general. It could potentially force the Hammers to sanction the sale of their star midfielder this summer.
Tottenham are among the clubs offered the opportunity to sign Soucek in the summer. The Czech midfielder is still at the top of his game, and there is a considerable chance of him joining a top-six club in the Premier League.
Formerly of Slavia Praha, Soucek has been a massive success for West Ham since joining the Premier League club in early 2020. The 27-year-old was initially brought in on a loan deal, but following a series of excellent performances during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, his loan move was made permanent for a fee of €16 million.
Two and a half years into his spell at West Ham, the midfielder has racked up over 100 competitive appearances for the club. His partnership with Declan Rice in the middle of the park has been critical behind West Ham’s rapid ascension under Moyes, with the Hammers firmly establishing themselves as challengers for European spots in the Premier League.
For a club already facing a battle to keep hold of Declan Rice, the potential exit of Soucek could serve as a massive blow for the Hammers. A move to Tottenham could hurt even more as the Lilywhites are currently West Ham’s direct rivals for the Champions League places.
From a sporting perspective, Soucek could prove to be an excellent coup for Antonio Conte. The Italian tactician is keen on adding more competition for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in the coming season. Tottenham have already targeted a move for Juventus starlet Weston McKennie.
In Soucek, though, Conte could find himself a midfielder who has proven himself in the Premier League. His aggression and physicality in the middle of the park could add real strength to Tottenham’s second line of press.
However, the report rules out the Czech international’s move to Spurs due to the club’s fractured relationship with West Ham. Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy has pulled the plug on various West Ham transfers in the past, including Emmanuel Adebayor.
With that in mind, it remains unlikely West Ham would want to hand over their star midfielder to their direct rival in the coming summer. In fact, it won’t be surprising to see the 27-year-old look past his complications with Moyes and remain at the London Stadium this summer instead of joining Tottenham.
