Edinson Cavani is reportedly in talks with Atletico Madrid and Sevilla as he prepares to leave Manchester United as a free agent this summer.

According to El Chiringuito TV, Edinson Cavani could be headed for Spain once his contract with Manchester United expires at the end of this month. The Uruguayan striker is in talks with Atletico Madrid and Sevilla over a potential Bosman move in the summer.

Cavani signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain had run out. The 35-year-old Uruguayan international enjoyed a solid debut season in England, as he netted 17 goals in 39 matches in all competitions while setting up six more, helping Manchester United finish second in the Premier League and make it to the UEFA Europa League finals.

Manchester United decided to extend his contract by another year after his exploits during the 2020/21 campaign. But Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival last summer ate into Cavani’s game-time, while the striker was also bogged down by fitness issues throughout the 2021/22 season, which restricted him to just 20 appearances in all competitions.

Given the lack of continuity in the side, Cavani’s form also declined as he finished with just two goals and a solitary assist. With his contract expiring at the end of this month, the veteran centre-forward has already confirmed he will be moving on from Old Trafford as a free agent. And as per reports, Spain could be the 35-year-old’s next destination.

Indeed, Cavani had been in talks with Villarreal over a possible move. Now Atletico Madrid and Sevilla have also entered the picture for the signing of the Uruguayan striker, with the former PSG ace negotiating with both La Liga clubs, along with Villarreal.

Atletico Madrid are in the market for a new striker to replace Luis Suarez, whose contract expires this month. The former Barcelona superstar will be on the move, leaving a gaping hole in the Rojiblancos’ attack, which Diego Simeone’s side are hoping to fill with his compatriot, Cavani.

Meanwhile, Sevilla need a new striker to add more quality competition to the duo of Rafa Mir and Youssef En-Nesyri. Manchester United ace Anthony Martial spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at the Andalusian outfit but is unlikely to be signed permanently. Instead, Julen Lopetegui’s side have identified Cavani as a target and are in talks over a possible Bosman move.

Apart from Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, Villarreal are also involved in talks with Cavani, while the 35-year-old is also a target for Serie A side Fiorentina. It will be interesting to see where the veteran star ends up as he bids goodbye to Manchester United this summer.
