Manchester United tracking Mason Mount situation

Manchester United are reportedly tracking the situation of Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount, a target for Liverpool and Manchester City.

According to The Sun, Manchester United have joined Liverpool and Manchester City in the list of Premier League clubs monitoring Mason Mount’s situation at Chelsea. Mount’s contract talks with the Blues have taken a backseat with the arrival of new owners, which has given interested clubs the opportunity to make enquiries.

Erik ten Hag has been monitoring Mount’s progress since the English international’s loan spell with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem. The new Manchester United manager is aware of the playmaker’s situation at Chelsea, and reports claim the Red Devils have already registered interest with the player’s entourage.

Mount’s contract with Chelsea has just over two years left on it, with talks of a renewal reportedly on halt due to the takeover by Todd Boehly-led consortium as the club’s owners. The 23-year-old is currently one of the lowest-paid players at the club, earning just £88,000 per week.

He has been one of Chelsea’s most important players over the last few seasons. Since being promoted to the Chelsea first-team in the 2019/20 season, Mount has been a mainstay in their starting XIs, making a total of 160 appearances for them. He has also scored 36 goals and provided 31 assists across competitions.

The recently-concluded season was his best in terms of returns. Mount scored 11 goals and assisted ten times in the Premier League, helping Chelsea finish third in the league table. With such numbers backing him up, it is imperative for Chelsea to tie down the English international to a longer deal.

Manchester City and Liverpool are also believed to have shown interest in the playmaker, whereas Barcelona are also keeping tabs on him. Thus, Manchester United will have to battle it out with some of Europe’s biggest clubs for Mount’s signature, if the 23-year-old decides to leave his boyhood club.

The player’s recent comments indicate that he is not too worried about the contract situation and is instead focused on the next season. But with bigwigs like Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in his pursuit, Mount and Chelsea’s resolve will face a litmus test in the summer transfer window.
