Marcos Alonso agrees three-year deal with Barcelona

Barcelona are closing in on the capture of Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso in a cut-price deal.

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona are on the verge of sealing the deal for yet another Chelsea defender, this time in the form of Marcos Alonso. The Catalans are in advanced negotiations with Chelsea over the sale of the left-back, who could become the third Chelsea defender to join the ranks at Barca.

Although not yet confirmed, Barcelona have a deal in place with Andreas Christensen over a Bosman move to Camp Nou. The Blaugrana are also in talks with Cesar Azpilicueta, and it appears Alonso could soon join the ranks and became a part of Xavi’s grand overhaul in the defensive unit.

The report suggests Barcelona are closing in on an agreement with Chelsea surrounding the immediate sale of the former Fiorentina starlet. The Blues are holding out for a little compensation as the defender still has a year left in his contract. Nevertheless, the compensation should be negligible from Barca’s perspective.

The player, for his part, had agreed personal terms with Barcelona – a three-year contract lasting until 2025. He is predictably determined to leave Stamford Bridge after falling behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order. Thomas Tuchel is further entertaining the idea of bringing in ex-Barcelona starlet Marc Cucurella, which could dwindle Alonso’s role in the first team even more.

The situation is a bit favourable at Barcelona, as far as Alonso is concerned. The Catalans have Jordi Alba as the only recognised option at left-back, with the Spaniard also in the final phase of his career.

Alonso could thus become the ideal deputy for Alba before eventually taking up the mantle of becoming the first-choice option at left-back. While Xavi will most certainly look to sign a younger alternative in the near future, Alonso has an excellent opportunity to make a name for himself in the first few years of his spell at Camp Nou.

With over 200 competitive appearances for Chelsea, the Spaniard offers loads of experience at the highest level of football. He can also bring the winning mentality to the team, having secured a Champions League title, a Premier League title and a Europa League trophy among other accolades at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso’s technical prowess, coupled with his attack-minded gameplay should also tune in well with Xavi’s tactical setup, thus making him an absolute bargain for FC Barcelona this summer.
