Canadian international Jonathan David is reportedly among the players targeted by Chelsea ahead of the new season.
A recent report from Fichajes has shed light on Chelsea’s pursuit of a new attacker in the summer. The Premier League giants are in the market for fresh faces as they look to undergo a massive overhaul following the arrival of the new owners.
Chelsea have already identified quite a few options in the transfer market, with the list including Jonathan David. The LOSC Lille forward is a man in demand this summer following his blazing performances for the Ligue 1 club and the Canadian national side. He could look to earn a big-money move later this summer, with the Premier League emerging as a potential destination.
The report suggests Chelsea are keeping close tabs on the progress of David. The 22-year-old forward is coming on the back of yet another excellent season in Ligue 1 that saw him score 15 league goals in 38 matches. He has been an ever-present figure in Lille’s attacking setup, impressing the onlookers with his dynamism and goalscoring ability.
David’s performances have been even more impressive on the international stage. In just 30 caps for the Canadian national team, he has recorded 20 goals and has played a key role in his nation’s qualification for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Chelsea will be wary of the fact that David’s value could skyrocket if he enjoys a solid World Cup. As such, they could look to make a move in the upcoming summer transfer window, especially in the face of a massive overhaul that could witness the exit of both the frontline strikers in Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.
Lukaku has remained keen on leaving Chelsea in the summer, with Real Madrid reportedly keeping close tabs on his situation. The same fate could befall Werner, who simply has not managed to get going in the Premier League and would be better off with a return to the Bundesliga.
Even Christian Pulisic is facing an uncertain future at Chelsea, although it remains to be seen whether his fate could be affected by the arrival of American owners.
Nevertheless, Chelsea have an excellent opportunity to bag the services of a rising star in North American football, in the form of Jonathan David. The 22-year-old Canadian international has shown the quality to perform at the highest level of football and could prove to be an ideal replacement for someone like Werner next season.
Chelsea’s pursuit of the Lille starlet, though, will largely hinge on the future of Werner and Lukaku, and the club’s efforts to offload them at the end of the season.
