Real Madrid reopen talks to sign Aurelien Tchouameni

Chelsea step up interest in £40 million-rated Liverpool target

La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid have re-initiated talks to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, a summer target for Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, missing out on signing Kylian Mbappe has prompted Real Madrid to prioritise signing Aurelien Tchouameni again. The Merengues have reopened discussions to secure the services of the AS Monaco midfielder, a target for Liverpool and PSG, in the summer transfer window.

Aurelien Tchouameni was already considered one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe during his days at Bordeaux. But the 22-year-old has taken his game to another level since joining AS Monaco in January 2020, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1.

Tchouameni, who has made 95 appearances thus far for AS Monaco, has also broken into the French national side and will likely be a pivotal figure for Les Bleus at the 2022 FIFA World Cup later this year. As for his performances at the club level, several high profile teams have taken note of his talent, including Real Madrid, Liverpool and PSG.

Tchouameni has gone from being a priority target for Real Madrid to someone they considered not pursuing in the summer transfer window. But Real Madrid’s interest in the 22-year-old has rekindled following their failure to sign Kylian Mbappe from PSG.

While the two compatriots do not play in the same position, Los Blancos’ pursuit of Mbappe had forced them to leave Tchouameni in the background. But with Casemiro in his thirties now, Real Madrid will need to invest in a long-term successor, making Tchouameni a viable target. But recent reports have claimed that the Spanish giants have fallen behind Liverpool in the race to sign the 22-year-old.

The interest from the Reds is somewhat surprising, but Tchouameni is versatile enough to settle into their midfield trifecta. And with Jordan Henderson and James Milner on the wrong side of 30, Liverpool will need to have someone like Tchouameni in the first-team squad. But Real Madrid and Liverpool face stiff competition from PSG.

Tchouameni is a request from Mbappe himself, and Les Parisiens do need to invest in their midfield unit amid the advancing years of Idrissa Gueye, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ander Herrera. But PSG and Liverpool will have to step up their efforts to land Tchouameni, with Real Madrid reopening talks to sign him.
