Chelsea are reportedly keen on loaning out Billy Gilmour once again, with Rangers in pole position to snap him up this summer.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Rangers are in contention to sign Billy Gilmour this summer. The young midfielder is currently on loan at Norwich City and is expected to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. But it appears Chelsea are ready to loan him out yet again, putting multiple clubs on alert.
Rangers are among the clubs to have shown the desire to sign Gilmour on a loan deal as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to reinforce his options in the middle of the park. A native of Irvine, Gilmour had started his youth career at Rangers, and it appears a return to Ibrox could be in the offing for the Chelsea prospect this summer.
Gilmour was regarded as one of the most promising young players to come out of the Chelsea youth setup when he made his breakthrough two years ago. But instead of making him a part of the first team, Thomas Tuchel made the bold decision to loan him out to Norwich City in order to help him gain some valuable experience at the highest level of football.
With just a few weeks remaining until the end of the season, Gilmour’s season so far has seen him feature in 22 league matches for Norwich City. He has become a vital cog in central midfield due to his ability to rotate possession and distribute the ball around the park. The youngster has featured in a defensive midfield role as well, thus exhibiting excellent skill and versatility.
However, it appears Tuchel is still yet to be satisfied with Gilmour, and the Chelsea boss wants him to spend another season on loan elsewhere. That is where Rangers come into the fray, with the Gers currently in the market for a new midfielder amid uncertainties over the future of Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo.
Aribo has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace this summer, while many expect Kamara to move on as well. The addition of Gilmour, therefore, could be essential as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to retain his team strength and compete for the Premiership title next season.
As for Chelsea, they have shown no immediate desire to make Gilmour a part of their first team. But the Blues remain assured of his qualities and have no intention to offload him on a permanent deal anytime soon.
