Tottenham on the verge of signing Sam Johnstone

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly inching closer to signing Sam Johnstone in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

According to Daily Mirror, Tottenham are in the box seat in the chase for Sam Johnstone, as the north Londoners remain in the hunt for a new goalkeeper. The 29-year-old English international will be available on a free transfer as his West Bromwich Albion contract expires soon.

Tottenham are looking forward to an important transfer window, which could be overseen by Antonio Conte to improve the squad. There are still doubts over Conte’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but the Italian tactician may remain in north London irrespective of whether or not Spurs qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

There are several areas of the squad that need new personnel, including an able deputy for Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman decided to sign a new two-year deal until 2024 back in January, which allows Tottenham to now look for a competitive backup.

Spurs signed Pierluigi Gollini last summer on loan from Atalanta and have an option to purchase him outright in the summer. But it seems like Tottenham may pass up the opportunity and look for another player with a pedigree in English football at the very least.

Sam Johnstone has been on Tottenham’s list for quite some time now, and this summer, the 29-year-old English goalkeeper could move to north London. He does have interest from elsewhere, although it looks like Tottenham are the favourites to sign the free agent.

Johnstone has reportedly been keen on joining Spurs, and the north London club could look to conclude the move as soon as possible. Tottenham may wait until the end of the season and swiftly move to sign the experienced keeper next month.

Johnstone is a great option to cover and compete with Lloris next season, as he may allow the Frenchman to rest up in games with little meaning. For instance, European group stage matches and early rounds in the cup competitions are where the 29-year-old English international could fit in, and he could also be important if Lloris suffers an untimely injury.

Johnstone will be a fantastic signing for Tottenham, who may then look towards bringing in players in more pressing areas of the squad, considering he will arrive in a Bosman move in the summer.
